We are a mixed animal practice set in rural Co Durham, first established in the late 1930’s. Your animal is our priority and our skilled team of veterinarians and vet nurses are dedicated to providing the highest quality care. Because we love animals and strive to provide excellent continuity of care, we are open six days a week and have access to 24-hour emergency care.
After working in Cumbria and Northumberland Helen has returned home to Castle Vets where she spent time as a student. Helen particularly enjoys surgical cases, and trying to help our senior citizen patients get the most out of life.
When not at work she likes to spend time outdoors with her own animals. Helen has a happy lunatic Spaniel, Monty who is a big fan of anything muddy, and a horse, Jack, who thinks he’s far too precious to get wet. She has also taken up open-water swimming which is a real challenge.
Helen Rickard BVetMed MRCVS
After graduating from university in London Helen spent a couple of years working in mixed practice in Somerset before heading North. She joined Castle Vets as a small animal vet and has continued to work there – having career breaks to have boys. As a family they enjoy spending time outside, walking their dog and much of Helen’s time is spent driving her children around and watching them play various sports.
Ian Harris BVet Med MRCVS
Ian qualified many years ago and has been working at Castle Vets for most of that time. He has lots of pets most recently a rescue Collie who is extremely hard work but good fun.
Anna McCosh BVM&S MRCVS
Anna graduated from Glasgow vet school in 2012 and joined the Castle Vets team in 2013. She enjoys the challenge and variation of a busy small animal practice but has particular interests in emergency surgery, medicine and ultrasound. Anna is currently studying towards the RCVS certificate in small animal practice. In her time outside work she likes to enjoy the outdoors whether its running, cycling, bootcamp or walking with my yellow Labrador Elmo.
